Tide Won.

The Super Bowl, an epic battle between two determined teams, or an epic battle between the ads. For those who don’t find the game of football entertaining, the ads, (and the half time show), provide all the entertainment. I am one of these people. The Super Bowl has given us some of the most iconic ads in history, like 1992 Cindy Crawford Pepsi ad or the 2014 Puppy love Budweiser ad. This year there was definitely some good ones, but by far Tide takes the cake. Tide, in the recent weeks has been all over social media and not necessarily for a good reason, but for the hellish, god forsaken “Tide-Pod challenge.”

Tide’s ad this year hit all the marks, it wasn’t just some funny big budget Super Bowl ad, it outsmarted all others. The ad features “Stranger Things” star David Harbour staring in ads for drinks, jewelry, cars, and then claiming that they are all Tide ads due to the fact that everyone in the ads are all wearing clean clothes. While this part is funny and clever the best part of the ad is when other iconic ads are introduced. The commercial spoofs an Amazon Alexa ad, shows a topless man on a horse spoofing an Old Spice ad and even changes the Old Spice jingle.

Tide incorporated some of the most iconic brand symbols, like the Budweiser horses and the Mr.Clean man and showed the world how it’s all one big Tide ad. This technique was a smart move, people instantly associated these iconic characters with their brands, so when you contrast it and have David Harbour pop up and say, “It’s a Tide ad,” adds extreme amounts humor and pokes fun at iconic ads. Tide is making fun of the stereotypical ad, it stood out among the other ads that night. It was original and took an almost obvious, simple angle and turned it into a chain of reactions.

Honesty the ad holds some truth, when was the last time you saw an ad that has people wearing stained clothes? On Twitter people were loving the Tide ad, while the companies that they spoofed fired back as well, even companies that weren't spoofed by Tide took a shot at the ad. After watching the ad, I was just waiting for David Harbour to pop up and say, “ It’s a Tide ad.” The ad is brilliant, funny and got a huge positive response on social media. The Eagles may have won the ring, but Tide topped it for the ads.
